Gear for hunting at a seal's breathing hole
In winter, when the waters surrounding Igloolik are frozen over, men go seal hunting. Because a seal will drown if it cannot come to the surface for air, it maintains a breathing hole in the thickening ice, named an aglu, from which it emerges periodically. The hole is often hidden under a thick layer of snow.
Whenever a hunter found an aglu, he would clear the snow from it with the Y-shaped item until he reached the layer of ice covering the breathing hole. Next, he would use the other tool, the pointy one, to pierce the ice. He would then make the hole large enough to harpoon the seal during its ascent to breathe through the aglu.
This tool is no longer used nowadays.
